Bio: I was born and raised in north central Texas around the Fort Worth area. I lived on my family’s small cattle ranch near Hillsboro, Texas until I was about 14 years old. I graduated from Paschal High School in Fort Worth, attended TCU for a couple of years and earned BA and M.Ed. degrees from the University of Texas at El Paso after returning from Viet Nam in 1966. I’ve been fascinated by art since my mother gave me a drawing book as a birthday gift when I was about 10 years old. Largely self-taught, I studied with such outstanding artists as William Kolliker, Glen Wilson, and Bill Bissell. My favorite historical artists are probably Winslow Homer and Charles Russell, but although my preferences probably lean toward impressionism, I greatly admire modern masters like Roy Anderson, Frank McCarthy and Howard Terpning. Yes, I’m a big fan of American West art themes.
My Art: I think of my paintings as representing “realistic impressionism” and my favorite themes are cowboys, horses, and western landscapes. However, I paint pretty much anything that interests me, so sometimes I do portraits of Victorian era women, gardens, or downtown El Paso cityscapes. People, and how they are interacting, fascinate me and I try to work them into my paintings. In other words, I pretty much paint anything that catches my attention – and my attention tends to wander!
